The RA Olivieri-trained Hirli Birli Lombo gave pacing fans quite a show on Sunday as the six-year-old gelding completely dominated a field of eight quality pacers to take the win in the 2010 NE Districts Cup.

The son of Lotsa Clout showed fantastic gate speed to take the lead three wide through the early stages of the race. The gelding remained three wide through the middle stages of the pacing event, but made a move to lead one wide in the closing metres of the race. It was a very comfortable win for the six-year-old as he beat out second place getting Thrills Ahead by a massive 19.30 margin.

Other top contender Jackdylan managed to grab third place 20.50 off the race leader.

Hirli Birli Lombo was the $3.00 race favourite to win and he certainly didn’t let punters down who backed the brown gelding.

The NE Districts Cup marks the end of another weekend of racing at Central Wheatbelt, but the harness racing action continues throughout the week. Be sure to get to SportsBet for all of the best odds on all upcoming event scheduled to jump throughout Australia.

Make Mine Cullen had a fantastic performance in Friday night’s Melton Plate to take the win in the Group 2 pacing event. The five-year-old mare became only the second female to win the Melton Plate since the race began 22 years ago.

It was a fantastic harness racing event that saw another top pacer Hollywood Bromac take the early lead. Make Mine Cullen was able to manoeuvre up from her less than desirable second row starting position to run behind the Lance Justice-trained gelding for the opening metres of the race. Coming down the back straight, Make Mine Cullen made her move to overtake the race leader thanks to some fantastic driving by DK Douglas.

While she was pacing in the lead, she did have to hold off some last minute challenges from Queen of Fire and Remember El who led three-wide going into the home straight. It was a challenge the daughter of Christian Cullen was up to as she not only held off her challengers, but also won the pacing event by a convincing two lengths.

Queen of Fire finished second with Remember El taking third. Here’s a look at how the rest of the field shaped up:

It was a fantastic finish that was preceded by an equally thrilling run of the Hocking Stuart Scotch Notch Memorial. The Group 3 trots event saw an incredible run from KP Waller’s Down Under Muscles who beat out a field of 13 quality contenders to take the win.

The Alford trained/driven brown horse started the race at a comfortable speed, settling behind race leader Earl of Mot through the early stages. By the third split, the leading pair began to turn up the heat, as they pulled further away from third place getter Heyzeal. In the end, Down Under Muscles displayed a stunning turn of speed to pull ahead and take the win by a very convincing 2.50 metres.

Earl Of Mot crossed second and Heyzeal rounded out the top three a further 3.50 metres back. Scotch Notch hopeful Don King was not able to overcome his 30m backmark and ran eighth out of 13. Here’s a look at how the entire field shaped up:

Monday night saw a field of top pacers take to Pinjarra track for the running of the WASBA Golden Girls Mile. Top New Zealand mare Elena S won the event, crossing the finish line 1.60 ahead of the field.

The GL Williams-trained five-year-old obtained the trail through the early and middle stages of the 1670 metre pacing event to lead one wide. It didn’t take her long to pull ahead to cross the line in first position. The win marks her third in as many starts in Australia this season.

GE Hall-trained Country Change finished in second place after leading three wide throughout the race. It was the filly’s first start this season. She was followed by Little Angel who rounded out the top three. She was a distant 6.30 off the leader.

Race favourite Little Big Sister had a lackluster run, as the daughter of Christian Cullen finished in 11th place out of 12 pacers. She was a disappointing 72.30 off race winner Elena S.

While the Golden Girls Mile has wrapped up, there is still plenty of harness racing action to be had.

The Tony Svilicich-trained Has The Answers took the win in the 2010 Brennan Memorial Pace on Friday night at Gloucester Park. He continues to reign over the pacing world as it marks his fourth consecutive win.

Has The Answers was the $1.10 heavy favourite to win the pacing event, and he didn’t let punters and fans down. In his normal fashion, the eight-year-old gelding showed strong gate speed to immediately jump into the leading position. It was a lead that he would never relinquish as he crossed the finish line in first position.

While the dominating Svilicich horse took yet another convincing win, it was one of his closer finishes as second place getter Pablito crossed the line just 1.50 behind. The six-year-old gelding was listed at $24.90 odds. Gary Bromac rounded out the top three, finishing 3.90 off the leader.

While the weekend racing may be wrapped up, punters and harness racing enthusiasts can expect plenty more action scheduled for Gloucester Park throughout the week.

The 2010 Tabcorp Park Melton Trotters Handicap ran on Friday, September 17 under good conditions. It was a trots event that had punters laughing all the way to the bank as some unlikely winners emerged from the pack.

Punters who backed Millburn Michael at $10.00 to win the Trotters Handicap will be eagerly counting their winnings as the bay gelding took his first first place finish of the season. The son of Holdonmyheart went three wide early on before taking the lead. He was leader at the bell and finished a full 2.50 ahead of second place finisher Wrath of Rosie ($11.00). No Early Spark ($4.20) rounded out the top three, finishing 4.40 off the leader. Race favourite Trottn On The Ritz ($3.20) disappointed in a big way as the KF Douglas-trained gelding finished in last place.

The night also saw the running of the Harness Breeders Blossom Lady in which race favourite Make Mine Cullen ($1.30) took a huge win over the field. The Gary Douglas-trained mare jumped with fantastic gate speed to take the lead right from the start. She led at the bell, going on to take the win by an impressive margin of 6.10m. Jazzam ($7.20) finished in second place and Queen of Fire ($28.00) came in third.

Elsewhere on the Australian harness racing circuit, Albion Park lit up with some fantastic pacing action, including the Termidor Pace. The $11,000 event was won by the American Fox Valley Appeal. The son of Sportsmaster was restrained at the start, going one out and three back at the bell. While it was a close call, the race favourite didn’t disappoint punters who backed him at $2.30 odds. He finished just a head in front of second place Rainbow Stride ($5.90). Dartmoor ($5.90) finished in third by a neck.

Gloucester Park saw another dominating performance from the Tony Svilicich-trained Has The Answers ($1.30). The brown gelding took a very convincing first place finish in the Ross North Homes Spring Pace, finishing a full 10.40m ahead of second place finisher Little Big Sister ($10.70). Auto Pilot ($4.80) took third, 33.80 off the leader. The win was good news Svilicich who was fined $5,500 for not reporting injuries to Mysta Magical Mach to stewards.

Another weekend of harness racing is wrapped up. Though there is plenty more on the horizon.

An elite class of trotters took to the track at Melton’s Tabcorp Park last Friday as they contested the Mittys True Roman Trotters Free For All. While the field featured plenty of capable frontrunners, it was Lance Justice’s Earl of Mot that crossed the line at the lead of the pack.

The former Breeders Cup champion took to the lead right out of the gate. He set a quick early tempo for the field always working to increase his lead. By 800m, the bay gelding has increased his lead by nearly a full minute. It was a fantastic finish for Earl of Mot who has now snapped a string of unlucky losses. It was also a big night for Justice who also took first place in the Blacks A Fake FFA with Our Malabar.

Armed Guard finished in second place, 1.50 off the leader. Lenny Lewis finished in a very convincing third. Plenty of punters were expecting a big showdown between Save A Sixpence and I Didn’t Do It as the more experienced stayer took on the newcomer. Though, both fizzled in this one with the former taking sixth place and the latter taking a very disappointing last place finish.

That wraps up another weekend of fantastic racing results, but there are still plenty of trots taking place throughout the week. Be sure to get to SportsBet to check out all of the best odds on harness racing events throughout Australia. You won’t find better odds anywhere else. Since they’re all available at the click of a button from the comfort of home, it couldn’t be easier.

I See Icy Earl shocked the field when the GA Hunter-trained colt crossed the finish line first in the 25th annual Redwood Classic.

I See Icy Earl ($11.00) edged out race favourite Chateau De Ville by getting a strong start, earning the plum position behind Paige Olivia. Me Neither dropped off the pegs at 1100m, giving I See Icy Earl the first glimpse at the sprint lane. Though the horse was dragged back to the main division at the start of the straight, he managed to move to the head of the pack after an impressive sprint. In the end, I see Icy Earl finished with 3.2m to spare over second place finisher Chateau De Ville, who had a stronger finish than expected after a costly early gallop.

Adding to the fun of the harness racing weekend was the Final of the Victoria Trotters Derby. Jingling Silver trotted her way into the history books by becoming the third filly in the past 20 runnings to win the Derby. The win also capped off a big carnival for trainer/driver CW Lang as it marked his fourth win of the day.

Bakas Cobber shot out of the gates, leading the racing at 50m out. Though, My High Expectations and Jingling Silver were close behind and in the end, Bakas Cobber couldn’t fight off the charge of these two horses. In the finishing metres of the race, My High Expectations took the lead, though was quickly overtaken by the determined Jingling Silver.

Miami H ($1.50) was the race favourite, but threw away his chances after a gallop at the start that cost him around 30m. Rostevarren ($4.80) also had a disappointing day finishing just one ahead of the final position.

The two races capped off a big harness racing weekend as it marked the end of the Redwood Carnival. Though, the upcoming week will be packed full of more trotting action, so be sure to get to SportsBet to take a punt on the upcoming harness racing action.

During June three elite level trotting races lit up harness racing venues across Australia as fans were treated to another exciting month of trot racing.

The first Group 1 feature took place on Friday June 11, when Tabcorp Park in Victoria hosted the $50,000 Group 1 Victoria Trotters Oaks. A stunning field of three-year-old fillies took to the track, but it was the pronounced $1.60 favourite Kahdon who took out the first prize with an emphatic 7.4m win ahead of Jingling Silver ($24) and Shes Commando ($18.50; the placegetters proving there is great money to be made on backing the consistent performing roughies with Place bets through SportsBet.

The next Group 1 race to take place in June was the $10,000 SA Trotting Oaks, another three-year-olds feature, at Globe Derby on Saturday June 19. Improving filly Amelia Darling was the winner, defeating a classy field of rivals including runner-up Landoras Pearl and Shes Commando. The winner had drawn ideally with the front row barrier one, showing that with the smaller fields barrier position is important when selecting which trotter to back at SportsBet.

One final Group 1 trotting event then finished off the month, the $15,000 SA Trotters Derby on Saturday June 26. Premier trainer-driver Lance Justice took out the Derby with the $1.80 favourite Tuhimata Glass, the gelding securing a narrow half-neck victory ahead of Backas Cobber ($4.40). The top two finishers headed the betting markets at SportsBet prior to the race, so sometimes it is worth sticking with the favourite based on their great form.

This month plenty more group trotting action is set to take place, with the first Group 1 July race already decided. On Friday July 2, Tabcorp Park held the $50,000 Group 1 Vicbred Super Series Final for two-year-olds, won by consistent Conch Deville gelding Chateau De Ville. The winner was driven by one of the country’s leading reinsman Gavin Lang, proving that with the juvenile features the experience of a champion driver goes a long way and this should be considered when putting your money on a horse at SportsBet.

Two more Group 1 trot races are still set to play out this month, with the harness track at Maryborough in Victoria hosting the $50,000 Group 1 The Redwood Classic for two-year-olds and the $75,000 Group 1 Victoria Trotters Derby Final for three-year-olds on a bumper night of racing on the 18th.

The 2010 Australian Harness Racing Calendar has all the details of the trot and pacing features scheduled for the remainder of the season, so check it out to start making your selections.

If you want to bet on these great trot races, don’t! Not until you take five minutes to sign up at SportsBet.

May was another big month in the world of trots with plenty of group racing action taking place across Australia.

The first major event was the $50,000 Group 1 Vicbred Super Series 3YO Trotters Final on Friday May 7 at Victoria’s Tabcorp Park. Earl gelding Mister Castleton took out the race after starting at $10.40 odds, holding off Backas Cobber by 1.3m with roughie Jingling Silver in third. The hot favourite, the Ross Graham-trained Rostevarren ran a well beaten sixth.

The next group trotting races were held at Ballarat Tabcorp Park the following weekend on Friday May 14. The first was the $50,000 Group 1 Vicbred Super Series 4YO Trotters Final where premier trainer-driver Chris Lang took out the quinella. Lang drove the hot favourite Let Me Thru ($1.60) to a classy 5.4m win ahead of stablemate, $29.80 outisder Happy Maori, with Zanzi Bromac a distant third.

Also held on the night was the $20,000 Group 3 Knight Pistol Trotters Cup where Muscles Yankee gelding Lord Of The Gym, a half brother to earlier winner Le Me Thru, claimed victory over Lance Justice’s Earl Of Mot with Viva La Fever finishing off the trifecta. Odds-on favourite Ronerail gave up his early lead and faded to finish nearly 19m from the winner in eighth place.

The third Group 1 trotting event for the month took place at Harold Park on Friday the 21st, when three-year-old filly Good Thanks gave reinsman Chris Lang another elite level win taking out the $20,000 Group 1 NSW Trotters Oaks.

The great trotting action continued right up to the final Friday night of the month when the $20,000 Group 1 NSW Trotters Derby at Harold Park was taken out by three-year-old gelding Backas Cobber, who had run second to Mister Castleton in the Vicbred Super Series 3YO Trotters Final at the start of the month, ahead of Bellingham with $1.80 favourite My High Expectations finishing third in the small seven-horse field.

On Sunday the Clinton Welsh-trained and driven Red Samurai claimed a black type victory at Cranbourne when the seven-year-old trotter took out the $20, 000 Group 3 Bruce Skeggs Trotters Cup (2575m).

Red Samurai ($17.90) beat home Ronerail ($4.90) by 3.4m with Armed Guard ($5.60) just over 1.5m back in third.

Acacia Ridge, who started the race as the warm $2.70 favourite, started well but had a disappointing finish coming in last. The Gary Hoban-trained gelding will be stood down for two weeks following a vets’ examination after the race.

In the final lap as they turned out of the straight Red Samurai sat dead last with 800m left to travel. Dream A Moment was the leader at the bell a head in front of Acacia Ridge.

On the back straight with 400m to go the field bunched closer together ready for the final sprint.

Dream A Moment and Acacia Ridge still held the lead, but Ronerail came from the back of the pack to race out three wide and move up quickly towards the front.

Into the final straight Ronerail loomed up and got their head in front of Acacia Ridge, but Red Samurai, who until the final 200m was sitting at the tail end of the field, began to accelerate chasing the lead.

Red Samurai came from dead last to claim victory in a thrilling final few meters

Acacia Ridge faded in the closing stages and broke half way up the straight, as Red Samurai came from last to claim victory ahead of Ronerail with Armed Guard holding on for third.

A son of boom sire Sundon, Red Samurai has now claimed victory in 18 of his 85 career starts for prizemoney of over $122, 000.
