I See Icy Earl ($11.00) edged out race favourite Chateau De Ville by getting a strong start, earning the plum position behind Paige Olivia. Me Neither dropped off the pegs at 1100m, giving I See Icy Earl the first glimpse at the sprint lane. Though the horse was dragged back to the main division at the start of the straight, he managed to move to the head of the pack after an impressive sprint. In the end, I see Icy Earl finished with 3.2m to spare over second place finisher Chateau De Ville, who had a stronger finish than expected after a costly early gallop.

2010 Redwood Classic Results:

Adding to the fun of the harness racing weekend was the Final of the Victoria Trotters Derby. Jingling Silver trotted her way into the history books by becoming the third filly in the past 20 runnings to win the Derby.  The win also capped off a big carnival for trainer/driver CW Lang as it marked his fourth win of the day.

Bakas Cobber shot out of the gates, leading the racing at 50m out. Though, My High Expectations and Jingling Silver were close behind and in the end, Bakas Cobber couldn’t fight off the charge of these two horses. In the finishing metres of the race, My High Expectations took the lead, though was quickly overtaken by the determined Jingling Silver.

Miami H ($1.50) was the race favourite, but threw away his chances after a gallop at the start that cost him around 30m. Rostevarren ($4.80) also had a disappointing day finishing just one ahead of the final position.

2010 Victoria Trotters Derby Results:

It’s certainly going to be a race to watch as the draw has seen race favourite Rostevarren going up against New Zealand’s Miami Hi after the surprise scratching of Kahdon. Rostevarren is sitting in a fine position in barrier two. The Ross Graham-driven gelding has had eight starts this season, six of which resulted in first place finishes. This includes Heat 1 of the Victoria Trotters Derby.

It seems his toughest competition lies immediately to the right as New Zealand’s Miami Hi drew barrier four, but due to Kahdon’s absence, will be racing from barrier three. The Kiwi colt is new to the Australian trotting circuit, but took an impressive first place finish in his debut in Heat 1 of the Derby.

Thanks to the last chance Heat 3, Ninegrandsons, Tuhimata Glass, and Bakas Cobber all earned their position in the Final. The former beat the two latter in the final heat to earn his position, but sits in the second row thanks to a very unlucky draw. Bakas Cobber and Tuhimata Glass took barriers five and six respectively, giving them a decent shot at the win, but expect this one to be a showdown between Rostevarren and Miami Hi for the top share of the $75,000 purse.

2010 Victoria Trotters Derby Final Field & Barrier Draw

Group 1 specialist Gavin Lang has his sights set firmly on a win with Chateau De Ville. The experienced driver not only took the win in the race’s inaugural year in 1986, but also repeated his success by again grabbing a win at the race’s 15th anniversary. Another win looks likely as Chateau De Ville (barrier eight) is one of the most successful juvenile trotters of the season. The gelding has taken over $60,000 in prize money with four first place finishes and one third in six starts. This includes a win in the Group 1 Vicbred Super Series and Group 2 Tatlow Stakes.

Despite Chateau De Ville’s success, it could be an uphill battle as the horse is in the second row, and many of his most lethal competitors were much luckier in the draw. Djasker, driven by Ross Graham, is in barrier one. While the filly hasn’t taken any first place finishes in her nine starts this season, she has taken three seconds and five thirds. Moyabamba poses the biggest threat in barrier two with five first place finishes in six starts. She also drew barrier two, giving her a much better starting position than the second row Chateau De Ville.

The race gets underway at 2:25pm at Maryborough on Sunday, July 18. It shares top billing with the Seelite Windows & Doors Victoria Trotters Derby in the two-day carnival. The race will be well worth checking out as it will be a showdown between Rostevarren in barrier two, and Miami Hi in barrier three. The former is a local favourite while the latter is an up and coming New Zealand competitor.

The first Group 1 feature took place on Friday June 11, when Tabcorp Park in Victoria hosted the $50,000 Group 1 Victoria Trotters Oaks. This Friday night, June 11, the great trotting action continues as the first Group 1 event of the month takes place at Tabcorp Park Victoria. The $50,000 Group 1 Victoria Trotters Oaks for three-year-old fillies is the highlight event on a bumper night of racing that also includes the $30,000 Group 2 Tatlow Stakes Final for two-year-olds and the $20,000 Group 3 Sundons Gift Trotters Free-For-All.

The following week the headline event around the country will be the $10,000 Group 1 SA Trotting Oaks for three-year-olds on Saturday June 19 at Globe Derby, and other trotting features that weekend include the $15,000 Emerging Stars Trotters Handicap Heats at Tabcorp Park.

The $20,000 Group 3 final of the Emerging Stars Series will then take place the next Friday night June 25, before trotting moves to Globe Derby the next night on Saturday June 26, for the $15,000 Group 1 SA Trotters Derby for three-year-olds.

Odds-on favourite Ronerail gave up his early lead and faded to finish nearly 19m from the winner in eighth place.

The third Group 1 trotting event for the month took place at Harold Park on Friday the 21^st, when three-year-old filly Good Thanks gave reinsman Chris Lang another elite level win taking out the $20,000 Group 1 NSW Trotters Oaks.

The great trotting action continued right up to the final Friday night of the month when the $20,000 Group 1 NSW Trotters Derby at Harold Park was taken out by three-year-old gelding Backas Cobber, who had run second to Mister Castleton in the Vicbred Super Series 3YO Trotters Final at the start of the month, ahead of Bellingham with $1.80 favourite My High Expectations finishing third in the small seven-horse field.

Following a 3 month recess, racing resumes at the Goulburn Paceway this Thursday afternoon the 15^th of April when a massive 10 race card will be decided with the first race set to go at 11:40am.

The programme will feature the $8,000 Taylor Made Travel Goulburn Trotter’s Cup and the heats of the Tom Hewitt Memorial, with the $7,000 final being conducted Thursday fortnight.

Michael Taylor, proprietor of Taylor Made Travel, has been a leading light in the re-establishment of trotters in New South Wales. He has supported the Trotters Foundation Series and now has backed a trotter’s Carnival of Cups series throughout the State and the trotting enthusiast is indebted to his generosity.

Scheduled as race 7 to start at 2:50pm, Thursday’s event has drawn together a very strong field of accomplished trotters who will contest the 2240m event from the standing start.

The standout performer is last season’s Victoria Derby winner Arizona Blue for Kemps Creek trainer John Heath.

The 4yo mare will commence from the 30m mark and following her first up 7^th at Menangle on April the 1^st she will prove much fitter.

As a classic winner and with earnings in excess of $110,000 she will start favourite and should prove the testing material.

Her strongest opposition will come from the in-form trotters In Midnites Pocket off 40m, and the back marker Earldom who has been handicapped on 50m.

Both have competed strongly in recent trotter’s events and are quite capable of causing an upset. Other strong chances include the former New Zealander Im Cameron Jake and the consistent Metropolitan performer Chew The Fat.

The three Tom Hewitt Memorial heats over 1710m will feature a number of good up and coming pacers with the $7,000 final to be held on Thursday afternoon the 29^th April. Tom Hewitt for many years was the district’s leading trainer whose Lost River stables “Karamia” produced such notables as Nikalong Shadow and King Rancio.

The first of the Tom Hewitt Memorial heats is race 3 sponsored by Top Water Carters and, following her recent win at Bankstown, Shes All Lady which is trained and driven by Tom’s grandson Dennis Picker will prove the hard to beat. A win by the 4yo mare would be a fitting result as she is out of Tom’s former good race mare Nika Time.

Also on the programme is the $5,000 Goulburn Soldiers Club Pace over 1710m where an impressive field of fast class pacers has been drawn together. With the pre post favourite Fifty Gorillas drawing the outside of the front and talented performers such as Just Plain Crazy, Kimberly Street and Shes Makin Waves drawn inside of him, the race shapes up as a very interesting contest not only on the track but in the betting ring.

With the first race set to go at 11:40am, the course gates will open at 10:30am and entry is free. For the convenience of patrons hot food, cold drinks and a licensed bar will be available. The talented Sundon gelding has drawn way back and out on Friday night in barrier 12. Coming off a brilliant succession of victories, the seemingly unstoppable Chris Lang-trained champion will again have Lang behind the reins as he attempts his 32^nd career victory.

The level of competition Sundons Gift will face in the event is elite with two of his biggest threats drawn either side of him also in the backrow, Thepowerofhealing in barrier 11 and Ronerail in 13.

Ronerail recently ran a gallant second to Red Samurai in the Group 3 Bruce Skeggs Trotters Cup, showing he could come from the back of the pack to challenge the winner.

Other classy contenders looking to secure the win on Friday night include Lance Justice’s duo Beleva drawn ideally in barrier one, and Earl Of Mot, who Justice will drive, also drawn well in four.
